Either you study free or self financed, you need to bear your living expenses in Germany. German Government only wave off the tuition fees of universities but living expense is a total concern of students.
Scholarship students also need money for living expenses but all scholarship provider give money to students for their living expenses. Because study in Germany is almost free so, scholarship provider mostly give money only for living expenses of students. That’s why getting scholarship of Germany is easy as compare to other countries.
The normal officially calculated expenses for a student in Germany for one month is 720 Euro. This 720 Euro include room rent, bills, internet, health insurance fee, shopping and other little expenses.

As I told you these are officially calculated expenses that’s why they looks high. Normally you need almost 400 Euro for all expenses. You can reduce these expenses by taking a low cost room and with no internet connection, its up to you. For normal food you need maximum 60 to 100 Euro per month, it also depend on your eating habit. Room rent is between 150 to 300 Euro, it also depends on you in which area you want to live ‘expensive or low cost’. Rent, health insurance fee and TV fee is necessary to pay, other expenses you can control.
German authorities calculated 720 Euro like this,
Rent = 270 Euro
Health Insurance = 84 Euro
Food = 166 Euro
Cloths = 60 Euro
Transport = 80 Euro
Internet, Mobile Recharge, TV fee = 30 Euro
Study Material = 30 Euro
As I mentioned above you don’t need to cloths every month so skip this. Further you can control your food expense up to 80 Euro because food is very cheap in Germany. For transport you can take a semester ticket which cost 184 Euro for 6 months. Buy a printer once and reduce printing photocopy charges. Don’t participate in other activities and save another 70 Euro. TV fee is 14 Euro per month for an apartment, so students pay this fee and internet bill collectively together. I write this because normally local or international students have less money so they spend their money very carefully.
If I calculate according to students real expenses then the sum will be this,
Rent = 250 Euro (include electricity and water bill)
Health Insurance = 84 Euro
Food = 70 Euro
Cloths = No
Transport = 184 for 6 month once (184/3=31 Euro per month)
Internet, Mobile Recharge, TV fee = 15
Study Material = 10 Euro
Total = 460 Euro (These are expenses for a normal student in Germany. If you work along studies then you can easily earn 470 Euro per month.)
Please these expense are only for your information. You don’t need to mention this information during visa interview. Tell them the original calculated amount of 720 Euro. With my calculated expenses you can use your blocked account money for one and half year rather then one year.
