Studienkolleg is a one year foundation course . Which design for the students, who have 12 years of higher secondary school certificate in their home countries. Because 12 years of education is not accepted as an entrance qualification in German universities.
If you have A-levels or completed at least two years of undergraduate course in a Pakistani university. Then you don’t need to take admission in Studienkolleg. You can directly start your bachelor course in Germany in English as medium of instructions.
In simple words, after higher secondary school certificate. You need to pass a kind of entry test or special examination called the “Feststellungsprüfung“. After passing this test you can take admission in a German university. And the best way for the preparation of this “Feststellungsprüfung“ is to take admission in “Studienkolleg” (foundation course).
Duration of Studienkolleg:
Studienkolleg have duration of one year (2 semesters), and ends with “Feststellungsprüfung” (university qualification assessment examination). Courses mostly start in spring and fall.

The state run institutes offer Studienkollegs free of charge. But private institutes charge tuition fees.
The language of instruction in Studienkollegs is German. In order to be admitted to a Studienkolleg, you will always need to show satisfactory level of proficiency in German. This also applies, even if you wish to take a bachelor course with English as language of instruction.
